GENERAL INFORMATION JANAPADA SEVA TRUST
- [Aims & Objectives]
In Melkote, South India we find a special house. The Indians call it 'Karuna Gruha', home of compassion.
In 1963 Surendra Koulagi decided to quit his job and help those who were mentally and physically enable to succeed in life. He went back to his place of birth and founded a school for physically challenged children. He started with only 5 children, but as soon as people started to hear about his work that number grew. Presently there are over 50 handicapped children in the school. Most children are deaf or paralysed after suffering from polio.
These children are provided with free education and if possible surgery and revalidation. Most children have a better chance in society after treatment. Many of them return to their parents after a while. Not all children can return to their parents, they stay at the Janapada Seva Trust. They are given free education and some of them even stay after that and are now employed by Surendra. They work at the farm, as teachers, in the weaving section or in the kitchen. They find solutions for day to day problems they face, like how to use the water well. An ingenious system was made so everyone at JST is able to man the well.
In 1980 'Janapada Vidyalaya' was founded: a school for handicapped ànd healthy children. The classes are integrated, so the children learn from each other. This way the school hopes to create understanding and respect for all human beings. Presently the school holds around 100 children in Kindergarten and 300 children in first standard and up from villages around. The classes are held everywhere in the village. In the dormitory of the handicapped children, in an old temple, in peoples spare rooms, in the field.

You will understand a proper schoolbuilding is first on the list. We have already purchased a few acres of land to build our school in the future. We also have people willing to work for cost prize only. An architect has voluntary designed a simple but practical house.

We have now started the building of a small school at the JST, so that the handicapped children and healthy children can enjoy their education together in a safe and challenging building.
In September, mr. Johan Willekes willl be joining the JSt for several months to assist them with his knowledge of constructing, road building, agriculture etc.

In 1968 the Janapada Seva Trust started a weaving- and a printingsection: Janapada Mudranalaya. At these sections many handicapped, widows and divorcees are employed. In the printingsection they print flyers, invitations and books for local companies. After their training at the printing press and bookbinding, many of them return to their home village and are employed there or in the area.

At the weaving section the women make beautiful fabrics, dresses, scarf's and cloths. These products are sold so the women are able to support themselves. *photo 3 women making fabrics

In 2001 the Deepa Foundation, with the help of the Rotary club of Noordwijk, managed to raise enough money to purchase an ambulance for the JST. With this ambulance, many people from the area are provided with immediate medical attention in case of an emergency. In the past, the nearest ambulance was 2,5 hours away in Mysore. Since the ambulance service was started on April 17th 2002, many lives have been saved after car accidents, heartproblems and other medical conditions. It is estimated that at least about 20 villages in the radius of 20 km benefit from the ambulance. Over time, monthly health camps can also be organised. We plan to train one nurse to handle emergencies.

As you will understand these are costly projects and therefor we ask for your help. If you would like to make a donation, we will be very grateful. Surendra Koulagi is slowly stepping down from running the projects. He has great people following in his footsteps: his sons and daughters in law. They are specialised in agriculture and mentally challenged people. Yes, JST is active in agriculture too. In the field of sustainable agriculture, and natural farming, JST is emerging as the leader and trainer in that geographical area. You see: his sons, too, have great plans in order to help those who are not as fortunate as they are.

Please help them in this great task.
